thepeoplesrecord: BREAKING: US-backed Guatemalan dictator Efraín Ríos Montt has been found guilty of genocide for overseeing the slaughter of more than 1,700 people in the country’s Mayan region when he took power in 1982 during the height of Guatemala’s civil war.  He was sentenced to 50 years in prison for genocide & an additional 30 years for crimes against humanity.  More than 200,000 lives were lost during the 36-year civil war which ended in 1996.  My High School U.S History teacher fought alongside the guerilla fighters against this guy. So happy.
